Qualitative Study of Opportunities and Challenges of Using New Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in Mathematics Education from Teachers' Perspectives

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Mathematics education has always faced numerous challenges for both teachers and students. The aim of this research is to examine the opportunities and challenges of utilizing modern technologies and artificial intelligence in mathematics education from the perspective of secondary school mathematics teachers.
Methods: This study was conducted with a qualitative approach using phenomenological methods. The research population consisted of secondary school mathematics teachers with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in mathematics. A total of 20 participants were purposefully selected using snowball sampling. To collect data, semi-structured in-depth interviews were employed, and for data analysis, the method proposed by Smith (1995) was utilized, which includes the stages of data generation, data analysis, and case integration.
Findings: In this study, four main themes related to the opportunities created by the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence in mathematics education were extracted: personalized learning, intelligent educational content production in mathematics, expanded access to mathematics teaching materials, and precise and rapid assessment and analysis of data. Additionally, regarding the challenges of using modern technologies and artificial intelligence in mathematics education, four themes were identified: teacher training and empowerment, inequality in access to technology, issues related to human interactions and relationships, and concerns regarding control, trust, privacy, and data security.
Conclusion: Creating a suitable environment for the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence in mathematics education can help achieve educational goals and enhance the quality of learning for all students.
