Given the importance of learning mathematics and developing mathematical thinking in secondary school students, the role of the mathematics teacher as a key factor in this process is undeniable. The aim of this research is to identify the general, specialized, and professional competencies required for effective secondary mathematics teachers from the perspective of student-teachers in the Mathematics Education program.
This research employed a qualitative approach using phenomenology, focusing on senior student-teachers in the Mathematics Education program at the University of Teacher Education in Tabriz during the 2023-2024 academic year. Samples were purposefully selected, continuing until data saturation was reached (31 participants). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Smith's (1995) proposed method. To evaluate the credibility of the research data, appropriate communication and trust-building methods, continuous data review, data adequacy assessment, theme review with participants, and peer review were utilized.
Four main themes were identified: scientific expertise and skills, teaching and learning skills, social and communication competencies, and behavioral and personality traits. The sub-themes of this research highlight the importance of mastery of up-to-date specialized knowledge, familiarity with modern educational technologies, understanding students' misconceptions and methods to address them, strong communication skills, attention to individual differences, and creating a supportive and motivating teaching environment.
Mathematics teachers must possess a combination of scientific, communication, and personal skills to provide effective instruction. By utilizing modern methods and engaging in continuous professional development, they can enhance the learning process of mathematics.
